What Verslunarmannahelgi actually is
Frídagur verslunarmanna began as a day off for shop and merchant staff and grew into the country’s great summer travel weekend. The first Monday of August is a public holiday, so Icelanders get three nights, and effectively the whole country goes somewhere — town festivals, campsites, family houses, the road out of Reykjavík. If you are travelling in Iceland that weekend, plan for it: this is the one weekend where accommodation, hire cars and campsites are genuinely scarce everywhere at once, not just in the popular spots.
What happens in the Westfjords that weekend
The country’s biggest events that weekend are elsewhere — Þjóðhátíð in the Westman Islands, Ein með öllu in Akureyri — which is part of why the northern Westfjords stay comparatively civilised. Up here it is a quieter, more local affair, spread across the villages rather than concentrated in one arena:
- Flateyri: Vagninn, one of Iceland’s oldest pubs, has traditionally held its Geirfuglaball on the Saturday of the weekend.
- The villages around Ísafjarðardjúp — Suðureyri, Flateyri, Þingeyri — each run their own summer gatherings; which land on this particular weekend changes from year to year.
- Ísafjörður itself is the hub for food, pools and boat trips, and is the base most visitors aim for first.
- Mýrarboltinn, the European swamp-football championship, was played over this weekend for years — but it is no longer held. See the note below if that is what you were coming for.
Worth saying plainly, because people still search for it: Mýrarboltinn is not running any more. The European swamp-football championship was played over this weekend for years — sometimes at Ísafjörður, sometimes here in Bolungarvík — but it has not been held in recent years. Its own website has not been updated since 2018 and it no longer appears on the Westfjords events calendar. If that was the reason for the trip, it is not on. The long weekend itself, and everything else here, is unaffected.
Why you should book early anyway
Whatever is on, the constraint is the same: Bolungarvík and Ísafjörður together hold only a few thousand people and there is no reserve of hotel rooms for a holiday weekend. Domestic demand for Verslunarmannahelgi books late and fast — Icelanders decide where they are going quite close to the date, and then everything goes at once. Getting here in high summer
Late July and early August is the easiest time of year to reach the Westfjords: the roads are open, the days are long, and Ísafjörður has flights from Reykjavík. The drive north takes roughly five to six hours. Some stretches in the southern Westfjords are still gravel, and mountain weather can turn even in summer, so it is worth a look at road.is and safetravel.is before you set off.
