Total solar eclipse over Bolungarvík — where to watch, and where to stay
On 12 August 2026 a total solar eclipse sweeps across the Westfjords — the eclipse’s first landfall in Iceland. Bolungarvík sits inside the path of totality: about 1 minute 36 seconds of full darkness beginning around 17:43 (5:43 PM), a touch longer than nearby Ísafjörður. Why watch from the Westfjords
The path of totality reaches Iceland here first, over the empty, glacier-carved coastline of the Westfjords, before crossing to Snæfellsnes and Reykjavík. Up here the crowds are thinner than in the south — but so are the beds. Bolungarvík and Ísafjörður are the only towns of any size inside the path in the Westfjords, so accommodation for eclipse week is genuinely scarce and books out early.
Where to watch near Dúfan
You want an open western horizon and, ideally, the freedom to move if cloud rolls in. From Bolungarvík:
- Bolafjall — the mountain right above town, with a wide sky (check the road and weather on the day).
- Skálavík — a black-sand beach one valley over, open to the sea.
- The harbour and Ósvör — a flat view west over the fjord mouth.
- For a few more seconds and the centreline, drive to Rauðisandur (2 min 5 sec) or Látrabjarg (2 min 13 sec), roughly 2 hours southwest.
- Ísafjörður is 15 minutes away through the tunnel.
Will clouds ruin it?
Maybe partly — and it’s worth planning for. West-coast August afternoons are clear only around 40% of the time, and 12 August has historically been cloudy more often than not. But even under cloud you still get the eerie total darkness of totality; cloud mainly hides the sun’s corona. The best insurance is a base you can drive from, so you can chase a gap in the sky on the day.

- Bring certified eclipse glasses — the sun is only safe to view with the naked eye during the ~90 seconds of totality, never during the partial phases.
- Arrive at your spot early and pick a clear western horizon.
